I should have returned this the day I received it when I noticed it was $20 less when I paid for it a few days prior but my 6 and 8 year olds were too excited. First thing I noticed it was very small but thought for their first it would be ok if it lasted a year or so. After putting it together, and seeing how cheap and wobbly it is, I will be lucky to get 3 months of use before it breaks. The hoop doesn’t sit level and each time the ball hits the backboard, it shakes so bad like it is about to fall apart. Save your money and spend a few more bucks and get a bigger more well built one.

I grew up playing basketball and did not want my kid to have a toy-ish hoop, I especially liked the square backboard. I read all the reviews and this was the one I choose. Some reviewers stated that it was not very adjustable. I find this hard to believe, but maybe they did not consider removing the middle pole section. My 3 year old is about 3 feet tall and she loves this. At the lowest setting she has just a small toss to get it in the hoop. The hoop can adjust with a sliding mechanism built in with pin holes to select the height – in addition to the ability to remove a large middle section. I believe my kid will get many years of use from this hoop.

The rim does well with a 6 inch 7 inch ball, which is a VERY small ball compared to regulation, but super fun anyways. The inside diameter is 13.5 inches – so you can use a larger ball.

The base has wheels and rolls around easily when you lean it over.

I had not problems with water leakage in the base, but if I do I will fix it by welding type 2 plastic into it. Buy kayak welding repair sticks and melt into the crack. Adding sand seems like a painful endeavor, but I suppose if freezing is a problem you may choose that option. I would probably find a way to cover the hole with a piece of breathable plastic to allow expansion. This is the desert so not really a problem here.

Instructions to put this piece together are not easy to follow. The screw numbering system does not match the instructions. It is sturdy once put together and great pool side.

This is our second skilz system hoop. Our first one lasted a long time and was outside in the northern Pennsylvania elements. We use this as a basketball hoop for our pool. The backboard finally broke one day when our son was making a basket, perhaps it was his strength and ability? LOL.

Ordered this new hoop and the 15 year old was easily able to put it together with the help of his friend. The only complaint I have is that the net it came with did not fit the rim. It was much too small. Having said this, I had been looking for a net for the old hoop prior to it breaking and and been unable to find one that fit. the replacement net on skilz website was out of stock for months on end. I was hoping this would come with a net that fit and we would be set. No such luck. I have had to use a regulation size net and let a few of the loops dangle.

It is also important to note that replacement parts are generally available on the skilz website. Our last hoop fell over in a windstorm and the rim bent. There are only so many times you can bend them back into place before they break. You can order replacement rims, which are then quite easy to replace. Replacement rim bought us many more years with our last hoop. Unfortunately, an entire backboard was not on the replacement parts list so here we are – hoop number 2.

This gets a ton of use with two boys and all their friends with an above ground pool. We leave it out year round and have had minimal rust on our previous systems. Make sure you fill it with water and use a rock or some other weight for extra support if you live in an area that is prone to high wind though.

My young son is just a basketball fanatic right now. He has a nerf mini backboard, but I thought it’d be better to get something that would give him a closer feel to a real rim. Some of the other oversized mini backboards seemed nice, but not quite as versatile. I didn’t want to be limited by a door or permanently fastening it to a wall. I looked for a few weeks then stumbled across this. I suppose this is more for outdoor or poolside use, but I put it in my basement and it’s great.

I just weigh down the rim with a single 45lb bench weight and it’s plenty stable for my son to dunk. I like the adjustability of the height.

Main downsides are it’s pretty noise and not the best quality materials. All the joints clang and the plastic backboard resonates a lot. I tried to dampen the noise with some electric tape around the joints and shock absorbers on the back. It helps, but I think if the design was tighter and made of more solid material it would be quieter. Also, the rim is already leaning down after only a couple weeks. Mostly from the spring losing a little of it’s elasticity.

Overall I’d still recommend it since it versatile and fun. Feels very close to outdoor play with it having metal rim.

My 11 year old son saved his money for this hoop. He & dad put it together in the matter of about 15 mins. Seems pretty durable and my son is quite happy with his purchase. We just put sandbags on the base, not in, so it’s easy to move.
